Hasanah.id – Pedro Sánchez has pushed back forcefully against US President Donald Trump’s threat to sever trade ties with Spain, framing the dispute as a matter not of alliances, but of principle.

In a nationally televised address from his official residence at La Moncloa in Madrid, the Spanish prime minister laid out what he described as a consistent foreign policy doctrine: “no to war.” His remarks come after Trump warned he would impose a full trade embargo on Spain following Madrid’s refusal to allow the United States to use the jointly operated bases at Morón and Rota for strikes on Iran.

Trump Threatens to “Cut Off All Trade”

The diplomatic rift escalated after Trump’s blunt remarks during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

“Spain has been terrible,” Trump said on Tuesday.

“We’re going to cut off all trade with Spain. We don’t want anything to do with Spain,” he added.

Trump has also labeled Spain a “terrible partner” in Nato, criticizing Madrid for failing to raise defence spending to 5% of GDP a benchmark the US president has pushed aggressively among allies.

Merz later clarified that he told Trump “very clearly” that a separate trade arrangement excluding Spain would not be possible, signaling unease in Berlin over Washington’s approach.
