Hasanah.id – The long-awaited return of BTS has sparked global excitement but not everything went according to plan. Despite the massive anticipation surrounding their comeback, a surprising turnout at their recent concert has sent shockwaves through the market, dragging down shares of their parent company.
BTS Reunion Draws Global Attention
On Saturday, the seven members of BTS; Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook—finally reunited on stage for the first time since their 2022 hiatus. The break had been necessary as members fulfilled South Korea’s mandatory military service.
The free concert, held at Seoul’s iconic Gwanghwamun Square, marked a historic moment for fans worldwide. It also kicked off the group’s ambitious 82-date world tour and celebrated the release of their latest album, Arirang.
However, while the event was highly anticipated, attendance figures told a different story.
Attendance Falls Short of Expectations
Despite expectations of around 250,000 attendees, only about 104,000 fans showed up, less than half of what organizers had projected.
Several factors may have contributed to the lower turnout. The concert was live-streamed via Netflix to audiences in over 190 countries, allowing millions of fans to tune in remotely. In addition, strict crowd control measures at the venue may have limited the number of attendees on-site.
Netflix is expected to release official viewership numbers later this week, which could paint a fuller picture of the event’s global reach.
The market reacted swiftly to the unexpected turnout. On Monday, shares of HYBE, the entertainment company behind BTS fell by nearly 15%, hitting a four-month low.
This sharp decline comes after months of rising investor confidence fueled by the group’s comeback tour and album release. The sudden drop highlights just how closely HYBE’s financial performance is tied to BTS, its biggest revenue driver.
During the group’s hiatus, the company had already experienced a notable dip in operating profits, underscoring its reliance on the global superstars.
While the concert turnout raised concerns, BTS continues to dominate in music sales.
Big Hit Music, HYBE’s label, announced that Arirang sold an impressive 3.98 million copies on its first day alone. During the concert, the group performed tracks from the new album alongside fan-favorite hits like Butter and Dynamite, reminding audiences of their enduring appeal.
