Battle Over the Science
Part of the controversy centers on research assembled by the Department of Energy, which convened a panel last year that questioned mainstream views about the severity of greenhouse gas warming.
Critics argued the group leaned heavily toward scientists doubtful of human influence and described the work as misleading. A federal judge recently ruled the department had broken the law in how the team was formed.
Still, some analysts suspect the administration may welcome a legal fight particularly if it reaches the Supreme Court of the United States.
Aiming for a Permanent Shift
Greenfield believes the ultimate goal could be to secure a ruling that future presidents would struggle to undo.
“This is really different as the EPA is exiting the space entirely and wants to do it on a permanent basis,” she said.
“If they were to win that issue as they framed it before the Supreme Court, a new presidential administration could not change that position, in the absence of new legislation.”
