Missile Deployment Timeline and Capabilities

Koizumi confirmed the Yonaguni unit will be equipped with medium-range surface-to-air missiles capable of intercepting incoming aircraft and missiles.

“The timing for the deployment of the missile unit “may change depending on the progress of future facility improvements, but the current plan is for fiscal year 2030”, Koizumi said.

The announcement came just a day after Beijing imposed export curbs on 20 Japanese companies and organizations, citing national security concerns a move widely seen as retaliation.

Although China has not formally reacted to this week’s timeline confirmation, it has previously accused Tokyo of moving to “create regional tension and provoke military confrontation” when Koizumi visited Yonaguni in November.

Within days of that visit, Chinese drones flew near the island, prompting Japan to scramble fighter jets in response.

Japan’s Political Shift After Election Victory

The missile deployment comes on the heels of Takaichi’s decisive parliamentary election win earlier this month. The landslide victory has given her government greater room to expand defense initiatives without significant domestic resistance.

Often described as a conservative China hawk, Takaichi has consistently argued that Japan must strengthen deterrence in the face of growing regional instability.

Her electoral mandate appears to have accelerated plans that were already in motion.
