From Sleepy Island to Strategic Military Outpost
Over the past decade, Japan has gradually transformed Yonaguni from a quiet border island into a fortified monitoring hub.
Currently, around 160 members of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces are stationed there, primarily handling coastal surveillance duties.
An electronic warfare unit capable of disrupting enemy communications and radar systems is scheduled to be established in fiscal year 2026, which runs from April to March the following year.
The addition of surface-to-air missiles would mark the most significant upgrade yet, turning the island into a more active defensive shield rather than just a watchpost.
