Characteristics of a Genuine Blue Sapphire
According to the official Sahabat Pegadaian website, blue sapphires can be traded freely. But, to guarantee their authenticity, they must go through a gemological certification body, such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
Blue sapphires are mostly found in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Ceylon, Myanmar, Russia, Australia, and Africa. However, you must not mistake a fake one for the real deal. Why? Because there are so many imitation gems on the market that look almost exactly like the genuine ones.
Still, there are differences between the real and the fake ones. You can tell by checking these characteristics of a genuine blue sapphire:
- Real blue sapphires have natural inclusions (imperfections), such as tiny crystals, crystal growth patterns, and fine cracks. This shows that the stone was formed naturally.
- High hardness level, which is 9 on the Mohs scale, making it one of the hardest gemstones after moissanite and diamonds.
- Has a specific gravity of around 3.95-4.03. This means it will feel heavier than its actual physical size.
- Strong blue color, ranging from light blue, dark blue, to violet-blue.
- It has a solid and transparent crystal structure due to the very strong chemical bond between oxygen and aluminum. As a result, light easily passes through the stone, producing a high shine and a clean look.
- The natural crystal shape is hexagonal or resembles a barrel-shaped prism.
- Common cuts tend to be oval with a combination of kite and triangle-shaped facets on the top, and rectangular ones on the bottom.
