Born on 8 September 1933 in Goar, Maharashtra, she grew up in the renowned Mangeshkar family. Guided by her father, Deenanath Mangeshkar, she began singing at a young age and recorded her first song for the Marathi film Majha Bal in 1943.
Her rise to fame accelerated during the 1950s and 1960s, as she became known for her adaptability across musical styles—from film songs to ghazals, bhajans, qawwalis, and even pop. Collaborations with composers like OP Nayyar, SD Burman, and RD Burman cemented her place as a household name.
Her personal life, however, was not without challenges. At just 16, she eloped with Ganpatrao Bhosle, a relationship that later turned turbulent. According to accounts, she faced isolation and control during the marriage. She eventually left in 1960 as a single mother of three children, later rebuilding her life and career.
Despite frequent comparisons with her sister, Lata Mangeshkar, she carved her own identity. Addressing the rivalry narrative, she once said in 1971:
