“After all we’d both inherited… the bounty of music. No doubt didi [older sister in Hindi] had a headstart, but that only made me more determined to catch up with her.”
Beyond Bollywood, her musical journey crossed borders. In the early 1990s, she collaborated with international artists like Boy George and Michael Stipe of R.E.M. She even teamed up with Australian cricketer Brett Lee in 2007 for the song You’re the One for Me, featured during the inaugural IPL season.
Her passion for music never faded. Even in her later years, she continued to innovate—launching the online talent show Asha Ki Asha in 2020 and starting a YouTube channel where she shared stories from her career, gaining over 160,000 subscribers.
Reflecting on her lifelong dedication, she once said:
“For me, music is my breath. I have spent my life with this thought. I have given a lot to music. I feel good I’ve come out of difficult times. Many times I felt I would not be able to survive, but I did,”
In one of her final works, she collaborated with the British virtual band Gorillaz for their 2026 album The Mountain. The track The Shadowy Light symbolized themes of mortality and spiritual transition, serving as a powerful and poetic farewell to a career that transcended time, geography, and genre.
