The US federal government has entered a partial shutdown after a temporary funding agreement failed to secure full approval before the deadline. Although the Senate passed a last-minute spending bill, the delay in the House of Representatives has resulted in a lapse of funding for several federal agencies.
The shutdown began at midnight Eastern Time on Saturday, marking another episode of political deadlock in Washington that has disrupted government operations and raised concerns among federal workers.
Several departments, including transportation, education, and defense, have been instructed to implement shutdown protocols to ensure an orderly pause in operations. As essential services continue, non-essential programs face temporary closures, and lawmakers are under pressure to reach a swift resolution to minimize public disruption.
What Triggered the Partial Shutdown in the US?
The funding gap occurred just hours after the Senate approved a stopgap budget designed to keep most government agencies running until September. However, the bill has not yet been voted on by the House, which is currently in recess.
Short-Term Funding for Homeland Security
One main point of contention is the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Instead of receiving long-term funding, DHS was granted only a two-week extension, allowing immigration enforcement agencies to continue operating temporarily while negotiations continue. This limited funding aims to prevent an immediate halt to border security and immigration enforcement but highlights unresolved political disagreements.
Political Tensions Behind the Funding Dispute
The agreement emerged after negotiations between President Donald Trump and Democratic lawmakers broke down over immigration policy. Democrats rejected proposals to expand funding for immigration enforcement agencies following a deadly incident involving federal agents in Minneapolis.
