The shooting of two United States citizens by federal agents intensified criticism of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Democratic leaders are calling for stricter oversight, clearer identification of agents, and new operational guidelines.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer emphasized the need for accountability, urging reforms such as mandatory body cameras, visible identification, and judicial warrants for enforcement actions.

Second Shutdown in a Year

This marks the second partial shutdown in the United States within a year, coming only weeks after the country emerged from a 43-day funding impasse, the longest shutdown in United States history.

The earlier shutdown severely disrupted essential services, including air travel, public administration, and federal employment. Hundreds of thousands of government workers were either furloughed or forced to work without pay for weeks, while delays and backlogs rippled across multiple federal agencies, affecting millions of Americans who rely on government services.
