Hasanah.id – As the Iran war continues to escalate tensions across the Middle East, one question dominates diplomatic discussions: who actually wants what from this conflict?
While most countries agree on one thing, ending the war quickly the real disagreement lies in how the war should end and what the final outcome should look like. The United States, Iran, Israel, and the Gulf Arab states all have their own objectives, and those goals often clash.
Understanding these competing interests helps explain why the conflict remains difficult to resolve.
The United States Position
Washington’s objectives in the Iran war have not always been entirely clear.
Under President Donald Trump, American war goals appear to shift between several possibilities. At times the focus seems to be limiting Iran’s nuclear capabilities, while in other moments the objective appears far broader, potentially forcing Tehran to meet all US and Israeli demands or even triggering the collapse of the Islamic Republic.
So far, however, neither scenario has happened.
Iran’s military capacity has been heavily weakened after 16 days of sustained precision bombing, but the government in Tehran remains intact.
Earlier diplomatic efforts suggested there might have been another path. Indirect negotiations held in Geneva earlier this year mediated by Oman had reportedly made progress regarding Iran’s nuclear programme.
