American YouTuber Jailed in South Korea After Controversial Livestream

SOUTH KOREA, Hasanah.id – An american youtuber known for pushing boundaries online is now facing serious consequences abroad. Johnny Somali, a controversial internet personality, has been sentenced to six months in prison in South Korea following a string of incidents that triggered public anger and legal action.
The 25-year-old streamer, whose real name is Ismael Ramsey Khalid, was convicted by a court in Seoul on multiple charges, including public nuisance and distributing sexual deepfakes. The ruling comes months after his actions went viral and sparked backlash both online and offline.
According to the court, “The defendant repeatedly committed crimes against unspecified members of the public to generate profit via YouTube and distributed the content in disregard of Korean law.”
Prosecutors had initially pushed for a harsher three-year sentence. However, the judges opted for a reduced term, citing the “absence of severe harm to victims,” as reported by local media.
American YouTuber’s Offensive Act at Historical Statue
The case centers around a controversial video Khalid uploaded in November 2024. In the clip, he was seen kissing and performing inappropriate acts on a statue symbolizing victims of wartime sexual slavery during World War Two.
These statues, often referred to as memorials for “comfort women,” honor an estimated 200,000 women across Asia who were forced into sexual slavery by Japanese soldiers during the war. Many of the victims were Korean, alongside women from China, Philippines, Indonesia, and Taiwan.
The statues themselves have long been a sensitive diplomatic issue, particularly between South Korea and Japan.
