Hasanah.id – A dramatic shift in U.S. climate policy is underway after Trump dismantled one of the most important regulatory pillars used for more than a decade to control greenhouse gas emissions.

The decision targets the landmark 2009 “endangerment finding,” a scientific determination that planet-warming gases threaten public health and welfare. That conclusion has long served as the backbone for federal rules limiting pollution from cars, power plants, and major industries.

The White House argues the change will cut costs, boost manufacturing, and ease pressure on consumers. Environmental advocates warn it could unravel years of climate action and trigger a wave of lawsuits.

Why the 2009 Finding Matters

The rule originated during the first year of Barack Obama’s presidency. At the time, the Environmental Protection Agency determined that six major greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide and methane posed a danger to human health.

Because Congress remained split on passing sweeping climate legislation, this scientific judgment became the legal engine behind federal emissions limits.

“It has really served as the lynchpin,” many attorneys and regulators have said over the years, because nearly every major climate regulation traces back to that single decision.
